If you are a keen photographer and you want to turn your passion into a career, wedding photography is a great option. The wedding industry is huge and there is a lot of demand for excellent photographers. You'll earn a good living from it too. However, there is already a lot of competition out there, so you need to make sure that you set up a professional business and put some work into getting your first clients. If you think that wedding photography might be the career for you, here's how to get your new business off the ground.

Start With Family and Friends

The best way to get started is by taking photos for family and friends at their wedding. You can offer this service for free to start building up a portfolio that you can show to other potential customers. People will not hire you unless they can see examples of your previous work, so it's crucial that you spend time building a portfolio before you do anything else.

Get The Right Insurance

You need insurance for photographing weddings, just like you would with any other job. You'll want public liability insurance to cover your work and protect yourself against claims that you've hurt someone or damaged their property while on the job. You also need a comprehensive wedding photography insurance package that will cover all of your camera equipment. If something goes wrong and your camera is damaged, you don't want to be paying for the replacement out of your own pocket. Before you start any professional paid photography jobs, always make sure that you have the right insurance in place to protect you.

Build A Professional Website

You need to make sure that you have a professional website where potential clients can go to take a look at your portfolio. You can include examples of testimonials if you have them too, but always make sure that the site looks clean and simple. Many photographers spend far too long on their websites, making them over-complicated and taking away from the message that they're trying to get across. If you are building your first website, you can find some great tips to help you here. Just remember to keep it simple and professional and let your photographs do the talking.

Invest In Better Equipment

Once you have a few weddings under your belt, you can afford to invest in better equipment. You'll need to get yourself some cameras and lenses that are up-to-date so that you can produce high-quality work and build up a reputation. You should also look into things like drones, which you can use to take amazing aerial shots and dynamic videos. A lot of photographers are doing this at weddings these days, so if you don't have the right equipment to match their service, you may struggle to get new clients.

As long as you follow these steps and put some effort into networking, you should be able to build a great career as a wedding photographer.
